The Storytellers opened for a preview last night and those who experienced it, including competition winners, described the show as "mesmerising", "magical" and "breathtaking" with one person describing it as "wonderful to see the cathedral I love so much by day totally transformed at night".

People can still book tickets for The Storytellers to experience for themselves the spectacular installation that brings stories out of the pages of their books and into reality.

Andrew Usher, Chief Officer: Visitor Experience and Enterprise at Durham Cathedral says,

“We're really pleased to welcome the artists behind Luxmuralis back to Durham Cathedral once again. The literature themed projections throughout the cathedral creates the feeling of stepping into another world. As well as the stories on display inside the cathedral, this year we are projecting manuscripts and texts from our own collection - including our rare copies of the Magna Carta - onto the outside of the cathedral which you can only view through the Cloisters.

With such a nostalic theme and with people spotting their favorite characters from books within the projections, we got great feedback from the preview night that 'The Storytellers' is another fantastic experience."

By day the cathedral will appear as normal, then each evening, ancient texts and classic stories will be projected across all areas inside the cathedral and Cloisters. The artwork will illuminate the centuries-old architecture, inviting visitors to pause and soak in some of the world's best stories and much-loved literature - from children’s classics to fantasy, from romance to poetry.

The cathedral will also be filled with a captivating soundscape, celebrating the timeless tradition of sharing stories. There will also be the opportunity to reflect on the experience and light a candle in the Galilee Chapel.

This awe-inspiring sound and light projection was created by the artistic collaboration Luxmuralis. Their works have been touring cathedrals in England for several years.

The Storytellers by Luxmuralis is suitable for all ages and visitors will be able to experience the event from 6.30pm - 9.15pm between 8  to 12 October. Entry to the cathedral is by a timed ticket only - Adults £11, Children (under 18) £4.50, Infants (under 3) free.

Special offer tickets for early show runs are available from the Durham Cathedral website. To find out more and book tickets visit www.durhamcathedral.co.uk/thestorytellers

About the Artistic team and production:

Artist Peter Walker and Composer David Harper are an Artistic collaboration called ‘Luxmuralis’. Through Son-et-Lumiere installation and sound art pieces they transform and reinterpret the sense of place and space creatively helping members of the public to take a physical and emotional journey to identify with the subject and message of the artwork.

Examples of the many reactions and responses from previous art shows:

“Absolutely fantastic, so thought provoking simply beautiful!”

“Just visited the fantastic displays, Truly stunning, thank you”

“Just been to see this, it was fantastic and very moving.”

“I have been to a good number of Luxmuralis events now and they never fail to move me. Using the lofty and beautiful architecture of a Cathedral to tell human stories in light and sound in a place steeped in worship, it feels like a modern form of worship; a new way to connect with and nourish the spiritual self, whether that be in concert with one’s religious beliefs but also not requiring any in particular. It is beautiful, it is moving, it is thought-provoking, it is grounding, it is community-building, it is phenomenal Art.”

What is it and why?

The Artistic Collaboration known as ‘Luxmuralis’ which means Light Murals in Latin, create large scale, site specific installations taking art and creativity to varied spaces across the UK and Europe

Sound and light art is projected onto architectural features transforming and enveloping the space. Visitors will walk through and view individual light and sound art installations digitally and artistically created by artistic collaboration ‘Luxmuralis’ which highlight the architectural features of the space. Viewers are immersed in the soundscapes they hear and walk through the projections that are all around them on an explorative journey through the artworks.

‘Space’ is a spectacular immersive journey for people to walk through and explore the space of the Cathedral in a new light, the artwork asks visitors to look out into space and think about what humans have achieved in our place in the world.

Sounds heard are musical pieces composed and produced by David Harper, visitors hear bespoke filmic arrangements that capture the visuals and invigorate the senses. The artwork and visual imagery is created by Artist Peter Walker who uses light as if he was painting on a canvas.

About Magna Carta

Magna Carta or the ‘Great Charter’, has been described as the most famous document in English history and a cornerstone of modern democracy. First issued in 1215, it was the first document that put into writing that the king and his government were not above the law, in order to prevent the king from exploiting his power. With three clauses from the 1225 Magna Carta still in force today, the document remains a cornerstone of British democracy.
